When choosing to neutralize, many enterprises guarantee that tons of CO2 emitted during an event be captured from the atmosphere by photosynthesis 

The advance of the greenhouse effect and the increase of actions about emission compensation of pollution gases, done by enterprises in preview years, promess to make 2010 the carbon neutralization year in Brazil.

Anyone can pay for projects that neutralize their routine actions, such as the locomotion of cars fueled by gasoline, a travel by airplane, among others. In the case of enterprises, the search for neutralization comes mainly by services and events sectors.

In Brazil, since 2007, there was an increase in the number of enterprises and institutions that have begun to neutralize their carbon emission. An example is the case of O Boticario Foundation, which adopted areas of the SPVS' Avoided Deforestation Program (Research Society in Wild Life and Environmental Education, in English) to neutralize their own greenhouse effect gases emission and what was generated during events realized to the outer public, between 2007 and 2008. From the total amount, around 250 equivalent tons of carbonic gas were emitted

One of the events which have their emission neutralized was the V CBUC (5th Brazilian Congress of Conservation Units, in English), that happened in 2007 and 1,800 people participated in Foz do Iguaçu. The emissions declared on the inventary reached up to 107,9 equivalent tons of carbonic gas.

Intending to neutralize the total emission in inventary along these two years, there were adopted 4 natural hectares of the remaining Araucaria Forest, which are located in a property in the municipalty of Tijucas do Sul, in the State of Parana.

"In the fifth edition, we measured the emission and neutralized it through adoption of an area in Atlantic Forest, being partner of the SPVS NGO. This time, we will research about the main emissons in 2009 to trace a plan of reduction for the next edition of the congress, in 2011", said Malu Nunes, executive director of O Boticario Fundation of Nature Protection.

While choosing the technique, a previously calculated amount of CO2 emitted by a group of human activities are captured from the atmosphere through the action of photosynthesis of the plants. According to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel of Weather Changes, in English), generally, to neutralize a ton of emitted carbon is necessary six native trees to be planted, like the Atlantic Forest and the Amazon.

More than planting, the neutralization can be generated by activities which promote the forest preservation and the energy efficiency, avoiding the burning of fossil fuels.

The Brazilian Institute of Forests develops the inventary to calculate the emission of CO2 and develops custom projects for pollution gases neutralization by planting trees. Nowadays, the IBFLORESTAS is negotiating the partnership with the FEMADE 2010, to neutralize the CO2 emitted during the event.

Anually realized, the fair gives room to the Lumber Industry, Furniture and the Forest Sector, so they show their new technologies, solutions and business opportunities for visitors, promoting the commerce and technological integration in the global industry.

For Ricardo Carvalho, Hanover's architect, during the previous editions of the fair, there was not the concern about neutralizing the CO2 emitted in the event.

According to the architect, the organizers of the fair are optimistc in relation to compensation actions of pollution gases emitted during the fair."We want FEMADE as an event in which there is advertisement of relevant information to the sustainability of enterprises linked to forest exploration", he says.

Carvalho also says that it will be a good opportunity to contribute to the environment, and the definition of the partnership with the IBFLORESTAS will start in February. "We wait for around 10,000 visitors in this next edition and this action will help to reinforce the fair positioning", he complements.
