Stunted Sparse
This biome covers 9.92% of the country and occupies an area of 844,453 kilometers, it consists mostly of savannah steppe. Stunted Sparce occupies the entire Ceara state and part of the territory of Alagoas, Bahia, Maranhão, Minas Gerais, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte and Sergipe states.
Some Surveys about its fauna reveal the existence of 40 species of lizards, 7 anfibenídeos species (species of lizards without legs), 45 species of snakes, four turtles, one of Crocodylia, 44 amphibians and one of Gymnophiona.
According to the IBGE, 27 million people are currently living in the drought polygon. The logging, monoculture of sugar cane and livestock on the large estates originated the economic exploitation. In the Caatinga, is still practiced rainfed agriculture.
The ecosystems of the Stunted Sparse biome are greatly changed, with the replacement of native plant species for crops and pastures. The Deforestation and burning are still common practice in the preparation of land for agriculture which, besides destroying the vegetation, affects the maintenance of wildlife populations, water quality, and the balance of climate and soil. Approximately 80% of the original ecosystems have been changed.
